In June of 2002, I was a fresh new Realtor with big aspirations. While sitting in my cubicle I was handed a copy of Realtor Magazine's 30 Under 30. At that moment, I made a promise to myself that I would someday make this elite group. I had no idea how I was going to make that happen, but I made up my mind.
I am the type of person who would rather set a high goal and miss, rather than aim low and hit the target. Since 2002 I have read and saved every June issue of Realtor magazine. This past spring it was announced that Realtors could submit applications for the 2011 Class of "30 Under 30" until January 15, 2011. After a few months of thought, I decided not to apply. I'm a humble person. I do not need a pat on the back, press, awards, etc.
In Early January, I mentioned to my wife that the application period was ending and I was not planning on applying. Having received the first 30 under 30 issue within a moth of meeting my wife for the first time, she knew how important it was to me. She convinced me to apply, and on the night of Jan 14th, 2011 I was completing the application before the midnight deadline.
In March of this year, I was contacted by Realtor Magazine as one of 50 finalists for this year's class. After a phone interview and providing proof of sales figures, It was now time to wait for the results. After a weeklong online voting session for the 50 finalists, I received an email from Realtor Magazine.
The headline read "Congratulations, you have been selected as one of 30 agents to be featured in this year's "30 Under 30" issue". It was the greatest feeling knowing one of my biggest career goals had been met.
I was invited to a special "30 under 30"mini-conference in Chicago. I just returned from the event, and I must say that I am truly honored to be a part of this special group of people.
I had the opportunity to meet many other 30 under 30 winners such as Teresa Staiano. Teresa is a Realtor in New York City and has had tremendous success. I also had the opportunity to meet Josh Smith, one of Arizona's leading REO brokers. The three of us have all had career long aspirations to be in the "30 under 30" feature.
While at Realtor headquarters in Chicago, I also had the pleasure to meet many people within the Realtor organization. Stacey Moncreif (Editor), Katherine Tarbox (Editor), Rob Reuter (YPN Manager), and Vince Malta (N.A.R. VP) were all instrumental in making the event happen.
I was truly honored to be able to be a part of an interview with Vanity Fair editor Bethany McLean. She is the journalist credited with breaking the Enron scandal and is the author of "The Smartest Guys in The Room" and "All The Devils are Here", which chronicles the collapse of the American financial system. I have attended motivational sessions with Joe Montana, Steve Forbes, Rudy Guiliani, Tony Robbins, etc. I can honestly say I was more interested in the things she had to say than any other speaker I have ever listened to. If you ever have the chance to hear her speak, I recommend you listen. She is an expert on banking, Fannie/Freddie, and our financial system as a whole.
